Step-by-step classes are held in Killarney. We work from photographs and also a finished painting that I have prepared. We paint together and I demonstrate each stage as we go along, explaining and analysing the techniques I use, which will be a mixture of brush & palette knife. We cover a variety of techniques and styles.
Course Notes: A sheet of class notes will be given to participants at each course, which will summarise all the points made during the course, including tips on colour mixing, composition, palette knife & brush techniques.

For September 2017, we’ll be starting with a seascape. Detail tbc! Last September we started with a painting of Valentia Lighthouse set against a stormy seascape! Lots of crashing waves and layers of white foaming paint!! We then went on to paint Yeat’s Liffey Swim (brilliant job done by all!), followed by a bluebell woodland scene, and some floral painting. Another time we worked from a painting by Alfred Sisley ‘The Banks of the Canal du Loing at Saint-Mammes’! Lovely impressionist techniques, using the brush and some palette knife. We work step-by-step, and this class is for beginner and intermediate painters, running from KDYS in Killarney. Canvasses, use of easels and the all-important tea, coffee & biscuits are provided. Paints can be supplied for an additional €2 to €5 per class. Course cost €175 for 7 classes.
We cover a variety of styles and techniques, and there’s always something new. I’m happy to say there are a lot of regulars who come to the classes, including one lady who has been coming for the last 10 years! There are always new folk joining too, and we are a sociable bunch, with a night out to a a local restaurant twice a year. We paint with the seasons, one recent painting was a bright and colourful autumn river scene using the palette knife. We have also worked on a series Impressionist Masterpieces! So far we have painted’ The Skiff’ by Renoir (see below), ‘Irises’ by Monet, and Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’. Just for a bit of variety, in September last year we combined Monet’s Beach at Argenteuil with a background of Rossbeigh. We took the same approach for the course in January 2015, where we re-created Monet’s ‘Magpie’, a most beautiful snow scene, and combined it with our Killarney Demesne!
