Repairs and Restoration

Cleaning, Repairs & Restoration

  • Canvas repair
  • Surface cleaning & removal of grime, soot, tobacco smoke etc
  • Removal of aged & yellowed varnish
  • Re-touching & re-varnishing
  • Restoration & gilding of frames
This painting is nearly 100 years old, and was extensively damaged- it had a large tear, mildew and dark brown blotches over the whole surface
The painting was carefully cleaned to remove the brown spots and restore the original rich colours. The tear was lined & repaired and the paint re-touched to match style, colour and brush-strokes. The whole painting was then re-varnished.

Damaged paintings can be brought back to their original condition. If you have a painting that is damaged in some way perhaps by tears or holes in canvases, water damage, scratches etc it can be restored. I will carefully repair the damaged area, then re-touch the paint by matching colour and texture to the original painting, and finally match the sheen so that there is no dull or shiny spot. This is a stage process which must be done over a few days in the studio. I can also surface-clean paintings, which may be sooty from hanging near an open fire, or yellowed due to age, or tobacco smoke. I use Gainsborough products, which are designed for use in the restoration of oil paintings.

This job was perfect for me! I have a knowledge of painting and decorating skills which meant I knew how to repair the wall, a master-forger’s ability to match colour and style, and a great head for heights and climbing, so I had no problem being 20 feet up on a ladder!
