During the weekend workshop, we will each complete a painting on a canvas 16×20 inches, working from photographs and also a finished painting which I have prepared. I demonstrate each stage, as we go along explaining and analysing the techniques and colours that I have used. Participants then paint each stage step-by-step with me. There are up to 6 in the group and there will usually be a mixture of brush & palette knife.
The workshop is aimed at beginner and intermediate level, and I like to focus on giving as much information on methods and techniques as possible, so that people have something to work with when painting afterwards. We always have tea and coffee to hand, and take a break for home-made cake or scones half way through the morning.
In this session we will paint an autumn woodland scene, using palette knife and brush. All the ochres, reds, golds and yellows of autumn are there in this scene from a well-known walk in Killarney National Park, just inside the Demesne gates. The palette knife is great for giving the impression of the leaves piled up along the paths, with the layered textured impasto effect. I love painting at this time of year!
