During the weekend workshop, we will each complete a painting on a canvas 16×20 inches, working from photographs and also a finished painting which I have prepared. I demonstrate each stage, as we go along explaining and analysing the techniques and colours that I have used. Participants then paint each stage step-by-step with me. There are up to 6 in the group and there will usually be a mixture of brush & palette knife.
The workshop is aimed at beginner and intermediate level, and I like to focus on giving as much information on methods and techniques as possible, so that people have something to work with when painting afterwards. We always have tea and coffee to hand, and take a break for home-made cake or scones half way through the morning.
In this session we will paint Autumn Floods at Ross Island, using palette knife and brush. Autumn is a lovely time to paint, and all the ochres, reds, golds and yellows are there in abundance in this colourful scene. Crisp reflections in the still water add to the peaceful tranquillity of the scene. The palette knife lends itself well to the thick impasto leaves in the foreground.
