There are so many beautiful places to go in autumn.. deciduous woods all over Ireland are full of colour, all the shades of rust, orange, ochre, sienna…I like to paint from places that I know and that Im familiar with, and the Bandon River is a lovely local spot that we pass through on the way back from Cork. I love the way the river goes quite wide, and light breaks through the trees on either side, the light catching on the side of the trees that face into the sun, strong shadows cast from the other side of the tree. In this scene, I was particularly taken by the autumn flotsam floating slowly along on the surface of the river, and the interplay of light and shade in the dappled shadows across the water.
Oil on canvas using the palette knife.
